In Manuscripts: Ancient Symbols / Contemporary Forms, Victor Ekpuk brings to his conception of scripts and writing the cryptic language of nsibidi and secretive mode of communication. He contemporizes and develops a calibrated visual language all his own from these ancient symbols and forms. In some of the paintings, Ekpuk mutes his mysterious mystical voice with a bright, cheery palette, but in others, he creates a somber mood of foreboding and mystery. The deeply patterned background of his compositions create a visually exciting field within which many layers of messages are hidden. Ekpuk's handling of colors, forms and textures is remarkable and masterful. He combines symbols in a way that radiates both meditative and intuitive reflection.
